Reno
Area Recreation:
Camping
There are about 125 public
and private campgrounds in the Reno/Tahoe area. Most require reservations,
especially those around Lake Tahoe and nearby reservoirs. Some
of the more popular campgrounds include:
Jackson Meadows/Woodcamp (800-444-7275)
D.L. Bliss State Park (800-444-7275)
Camp Richardson-Camp Richardson Corral -- Horseback Riding
Hwy 89, South Lake Tahoe, CA (530) 541-3113
Nevada Beach (916-544-5994)
Donner Memorial State Park (800-444-7275)
Davis Creek (775-849-0684)
For more information contact the Toiyabe Forest office at (775-331-6444),
or the Nevada State Parks at (775-687-4370).
Hiking/Mountain
Biking
Caughlin Ranch in Southwest Reno has over 17 miles of walking
trails along ponds and creeks. You can start at the intersection
of Plumb Lane & McCarran Blvd.
The River Walk trail runs alongside the Truckee River from Idlewild
Park, through downtown, and out to East Sparks. It ends near the
intersection of McCarran Blvd. & Greg Street (seven miles).
Peavine Peak is a very popular spot for all outdoor enthusiasts.
Hiking, biking, atv, and four wheel drive paths criss-cross from
the base to the top at an elevation of 8,266. Mount Rose is also
a good place to hike in the summer. The peak of Mount Rose is
at 10,776 ft., a real "Iron Man" hike. For more information
on Peavine/Mt. Rose, call the Carson Ranger District at (775-992-2766).
One of the most popular mountain bike areas in the entire nation
is the Flume Trail. Thousands of hikers and bikers use this historic
path over Tahoe's ridgetops, which was once a log flume that supplied
timber from the lake to Virginia City for the mineshafts. Call
the Spooner Lake State Park at (775-831-0494).
By far the best hiking area, the Tahoe Rim Trail is 150 miles
of trails winding around Lake Tahoe along the mountain peaks.
Now just 10 miles short of being finished, hundreds of volunteers
have constructed the path, and are involved in the upkeep. For
more information, call (775-588-0686)
Skiing/Ice
Skating
With 17 ski resorts, the best views and over 150 lifts, it's
no wonder Tahoe is #1. Squaw Valley was home to the 1960 Winter
Olympics, and recently added a Funitel High speed lift. Mount
Rose is a favorite of the locals, since it is only 20 minutes
from downtown Reno.
